The Hungarian Foreign Trade Bank has existed since 1950, when the Rákosi regime renamed the Hungarian Trade Bank of Pest after it was nationalized. The Hungarian Trade Bank of Pest was the oldest Hungarian bank in today’s sense of the word (it was founded in 1840). Under the communist regime, the bank served as an exclusive agent in foreign currency transactions. In 1987, as a consequence of the reform of the bank sector, it was turned into a regular trade bank. It was privatized in 1994 and has remained private ever since.

Hungarian Heritage House

The Hungarian Heritage House (HHH) was founded as a national institution in 2001 by the Secretary of State for the Ministry of Cultural Heritage. Its main aim is the preservation and promotion of Hungarian folk traditions. The HHH consists of three branches: the Folklore Documentation Centre, which contains the Hungarian folk culture collection; the Library and Archives, which contain folk music and folk dance collections; and the Folk Arts Department, which organizes courses, conferences, play-houses etc. and cooperates with other cultural institutions. The HHH supports the work of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble (founded in 1951).

Hungarian Historical Film Foundation

The Hungarian Historical Film Foundation, and its successor, the Hungarian Historical Film Public Foundation, operated for seventeen years. At the beginning, the board of trustees prioritized applications dealing with the history of the 1956 revolution and the decisive issues concerning Hungarian nationalities. Later, this thematic limitation was dropped and its main goal became fostering portrayal, adaptation and preservation of 20^th-century historical processes leading to the present.

Hungarian Human Rights Foundation

Founded in 1976 by second-generation Hungarian American intellectuals and professionals and referred to until 1984 as the Committee for Human Rights in Romania (CHRR), HHRF undertook advocacy on behalf of Hungarian minorities living in Central and Eastern Europe. It did so not by calling for the restoration of pre-World War I borders, but rather by making reference to violations of the basic human rights of members of these communities, rights the protection of which was officially granted at the national and international levels. Until the second half of the 1980s, HHRF mostly represented the interests of Hungarians living in Romania in interactions with the United States Congress and the U.S. State Department, as well as with several international organizations charged with monitoring human and minority rights. After 1984, HHRF expanded its range of activity to Slovakia, and it later expanded to Serbia, Ukraine, and Austria. The most remarkable result attained through the advocacy of HHRF was the suspension in 1987 by the U.S. Congress of the status of Most Favored Nation, previously granted to Romania despite the country’s poor record on human rights. During the last phase of the Cold War, HHRF managed to establish fruitful cooperation on the issue of human rights with both the Western-oriented liberal Hungarian democratic opposition and conservative-minded populist intellectuals who blamed the Kádár regime for its failure to protest against the anti-Hungarian policies of the Romanian communist regime. The American-Hungarian diaspora and the various opposition groups in Hungary worked together to support the Hungarian minorities living in the neighboring states after the 1989 regime change as well.

Hungarian Institute of Culture

The Hungarian Institute of Culture was established on 1 January 1992 by an edict of The Ministry of Education.
The aim of the Hungarian Institute of Culture was to promote cultural work and new cultural initiatives. It also supported the folk-art tradition and the spread of interest in the fates of Hungarian nationalities living beyond the borders in the neighboring countries. The purpose of the institution was to examine the social effects of cultural values and to educate specialists. The other task of the institution was to ensure the authenticity of the folk creations, to look after the folk-art collections, and to provide opinions on folk art creations. The location of the institution was in the building of the so-called Budai Vigadó (8 Corvin tér, Budapest).
