Artists Priesthood was a diversified group of creators who contributed to various artistic activities during the Weeks of Christian Culture in socialist Poland. The Priesthood gathered painters, writers, sculptors, actors, as well as journalists and political activists. In the 1970s and 1980s they developed a safe space for cultural activities in times of repressions and censorship. Cooperation between the Catholic Church and people of culture resulted in a myriad of artistic exhibitions, concerts, poetry readings, dramatic plays and intellectual debates all over socialist Poland – sometimes of quite modern and controversial nature. After 1989 Artist Priesthood has still been a productive group of creators, although now its members focus rather on sacral art and religious subjects.
